I know just how much there is to be had from a really well written example; I taught a whole undergraduate module based on an excellent collection and the more I worked on them the more I could understand their brilliance - and yet! I still wouldn't read them out of choice. I think for me it's to do with the over-riding importance of plot in reading. There simply isn't time for enough to develop for me.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-182642520216901583.post-22729132009457556612007-12-10T15:15:00.000+00:002007-12-10T15:15:00.000+00:00You're right about the unexpected happening in rea...You're right about the unexpected happening in real life so no, not sure I agree with Borges either, but I've got 2 collections of his stories, so I'll give you an update on that sometime.

Yes, I guess I'd be able and happy to host next week - it's a day I'm home, not stuck on a train somewhere, though my broadband connection is a bit unreliable. What all do I need to do? If at the end of 6 months you still don't enjoy them, no big deal- they're not for everyone's taste I'm sure. But to help things along, are you interested in hosting Short Stoy Monday's here next week?

Jorge Luis Borges seems like an interesting guy. I'm not sure I agree about his thoughts on surprise endings though. While I don't like when the surprise is forced, in real life things sometimes come out of nowhere. Where would "Desiree's Baby" or "The Lottery" be without the unexpected?John Mutfordhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08730205221787092204noreply@blogger.com
